Safina Namukwaya, a Ugandan woman, has taken the world by storm after giving birth to twins at the age of 70. Just weeks after bringing home her son and daughter, she proudly unveiled them for the first time.
On November 29, Safina gave birth to a boy and a girl via Caesarean section at a fertility clinic in Kampala. Doctors described the babies as healthy and strong, weighing about 2.2 kg each when they were discharged in early January.
Dr Edward Tamale, one of the chief specialists, described Safina as a devoted mother, full of joy, who couldn’t take her eyes off her babies: “She smiles all the time and is completely captivated by them.”
The twins have been named Shakira Babiire Nabagala and Kato Shafik Kangave, or Babiire and Kato for short. After their birth, the parents received new honorary titles in the village: Safina is now called Nalongo (mother of twins), and her husband is Salongo (father of twins).
Doctors continue to admire Safina’s excellent health: she has no hypertension or diabetes, and her general condition is excellent. “She is strong, full of energy and glowing with happiness,” the medical staff noted.
Pediatrician Gloria Lugnolo called the babies “miracle children” and confirmed that they are feeding well both on breast milk and from a bottle, adapting well to life at home.
Two days after giving birth, Safina expressed deep gratitude: “Some people will say that 70 is too old, but I believe that God chose this moment for me.”
Safina is already the mother of a three-year-old girl and admits that she is not alone: “I have help with housework and the children, especially at my age.”
She became pregnant through IVF, using donor eggs and her husband’s sperm, which made this amazing stage of her life possible.
