Natalia Sakado was born and raised in St. Petersburg. From a young age, she showed an interest in languages; after finishing school, she enrolled in a teacher training institute, where she began teaching English while still a student.
Her life was proceeding normally until 2008, when she met some students from Ghana. At the time, Natalia knew little about that distant West African country, but this encounter changed her destiny.
Among the students was Frank, a serious and straightforward young man. For six months, they simply saw each other in the company of mutual friends without even speaking to one another.

But at some point, Frank gathered the courage to approach Natalia with an unexpected proposal: to start dating so they could get to know each other better and, eventually, get married.
His frankness and confidence surprised her, and she decided to give this unusual story a chance.
On May 29, 2011, Natalia and Frank registered their marriage in St. Petersburg, and a month later, they were married in a Lutheran church. Frank graduated from university and soon after decided to move to Ghana to start a new life.

When Natalia became pregnant, she discovered an unexpected side of an intercultural marriage. One day, she received a terrifying message from a stranger on social media. He accused her of betraying her homeland, writing that she had “given herself to a lizard and would now give birth to a child with green blood.” These words terrified Natalia so much that it took her a long time to recover from the shock.
When her first child was born, Natalia was afraid to take him out for walks. Whenever she went out, she would look around, fearing threats.
It was only after moving to Ghana that she finally felt safe. She was warmly welcomed there, and her fears gradually faded away.
