He weighed almost 600 kg. His body had become a prison, his bed the only world he lived in.

Juan Pedro Franco, a Mexican with a kind gaze and a serene voice, was known for a long time as the heaviest man on the planet. But behind this title lies a story of suffering, hope, and incredible inner strength.

Juan was born healthy, but from a very young age he began to gain weight drastically. In his teens, he suffered a serious injury and was bedridden.

This was the beginning of his rapid decline into obesity. By age 20, he could no longer walk; by 30, he could barely breathe.

He lived in isolation, completely dependent on his mother’s care. His heart, his liver, his joints… everything was suffering. The doctors were pessimistic. But deep inside, a faint yet tenacious will to live still burned.

In 2016, his story was covered by the media, attracting the attention of Mexico’s top bariatric surgeons.

A team led by Dr. José Castro prepared him for many months; he was assisted by doctors, nutritionists, and physical therapists. He initially lost over 170 kg before his body was ready for surgery.

Juan Pedro underwent a sleeve gastrectomy, an operation to reduce the size of his stomach. This was just the first step. Over the following years, he underwent other procedures and continued to lose weight.

He lost more than 700 pounds and, for the first time in years, was able to stand and take his first steps.

Today, Juan is over forty years old and lives in León, Mexico. He is no longer bedridden. He walks, talks, and smiles. He composes music, dreams of traveling, and helps others by sharing his story.
