The dramatic change earned her a place in the country’s LIMCA record book after she lost 200 kilos and was no longer “the heaviest woman in Asia.”
Dr. Shashank Shah, an expert in bariatric surgery, helped her with surgical procedures after Amita Rajani developed obesity at the age of six.
Although she was born at an ideal weight, by 16 she weighed 125 kilos and was unable to perform everyday activities. Her family became concerned and began searching for solutions.

It wasn’t until she was 42 that she began treatment with Dr. Shashank Shah. It was going to be difficult since he not only had obesity, but also high cholesterol, kidney problems, type 2 diabetes, and respiratory issues.
The surgery was performed in two stages. The first, in 2015, involved a laparoscopic gastrectomy. He improved and began walking. Two years later, he underwent gastric bypass surgery and weighed 139 kilograms (300 pounds).

The most difficult part of the treatment was changing his eating habits, even though the surgical interventions reduced his appetite, but not his anxiety. However, he reversed his entire condition and today no longer suffers from diabetes or high blood pressure.
Dr. Shashank Shah explained that after cancer or AIDS, obesity is one of the most common and devastating diseases.
