In Northern Ireland, the Bateson family had been waiting for a miracle for many years. After undergoing fertility treatment, the parents’ dream came true: their long-awaited daughters were born. But joy quickly turned to worry: the doctors announced that the little girls were conjoined twins, joined at the chest and pelvis.

On the ultrasound screen, the expectant mother saw two hearts. Annabelle and Isabelle shared a liver, intestine, bladder, and a leg.

Each had her own leg, but their bodies were so intertwined that even the most experienced surgeons couldn’t immediately tell if it was safe to separate them.

The birth took place in March 2022 at the University Hospital in London. Immediately after their birth, the little girls were transferred to one of the best children’s hospitals in the United Kingdom.

There, the doctors began a lengthy preparation for the operation, as it was not only a matter of “separating” the bodies, but also of ensuring that each of the sisters could live and develop independently.

Months passed. The medical team studied the images, 3D models of the organs and vessels, and practiced on virtual simulations.

In September 2022, the dreaded and anticipated day arrived. More than thirty specialists gathered in two neighboring operating rooms to complete the several-hour operation.

After eighteen hours of intense labor, Annabelle and Isabelle found themselves on separate tables for the first time. Each now had their own leg. Despite their loss, they were both alive.

Weeks in intensive care followed, dozens of bandages, and other surgeries. In total, the little girls have undergone about twenty operations since birth.

Today, Annabelle and Isabelle are growing up like two ordinary sisters. They have different personalities: Annabelle is more talkative, loves attention, and loves to sing, while Isabelle is quieter, but very active and determined.

They attend physiotherapy sessions, learn to use special orthoses and prepare for prosthetics.
