He once weighed nearly 600 kg. His body had become a prison, his bed – the only world he lived in.

Juan Pedro Franco, a Mexican with kind eyes and a calm voice, was long known as the heaviest man on the planet. But behind this title lies a story of suffering, hope, and incredible inner strength.

Juan was born healthy, but from an early age, he began to gain weight dramatically. As a teenager, he suffered a serious injury and found himself bedridden.

This was the beginning of his rapid decline into obesity. By the age of 20, he could no longer walk; by the age of 30, he was barely breathing.

He lived in isolation, entirely dependent on his mother for help. His heart, his liver, his joints—everything was suffering. Doctors were pessimistic. But within him still burned a faint but tenacious will to live.

In 2016, his story was covered by the media, attracting the attention of Mexico’s top bariatric surgeons.

A team led by Dr. José Castro prepared him for many months—doctors, dietitians, and physiotherapists accompanied him. He initially lost over 170 kg before his body was ready for surgery.

Juan Pedro underwent a sleeve gastrectomy—an operation to reduce the size of his stomach. This was only the first step. Over the next few years, he underwent other procedures and continued to lose weight.

He lost over 330 kg and, for the first time in years, he was able to stand up and take his first steps.

Today, Juan is over forty years old and lives in León, Mexico. He is no longer bedridden. He walks, talks, and smiles. He makes music, dreams of traveling, and helps others by telling his story.
