Today they are already seven years old—and they are completely different little girls. They laugh, play, study, and discover the world in their own way.

Nima and Dawa were only 14 months old when they were transferred from Bhutan to Melbourne for a vital operation at the Royal Children’s Hospital in 2018.
Conjoined twins are a rare phenomenon, in which the babies’ bodies are physically joined, and it’s not always possible to separate them, especially if they share limbs or organs. However, Nima and Dawa were separated during a six-hour surgery.
Their mother, Bhumchu Zangmo, said the girls are now healthy and attending second grade in Bhutan.
“They are growing very well and are already very independent,” says their mother.
For their birthday, which they usually celebrate with friends with a small party and cake, this time the girls decided to spend the day differently—visiting a local temple and offering food to the elders.
Bhumchu explained that even the small joys are important to them.
