When Tatiana and Krista Hogan were born in 2006 in Vancouver, Canada, doctors doubted they would survive even a few days.
They were born with an extremely rare anomaly—they were joined at the head, with part of their brains shared. The medical term is “craniopagos,” and it occurs in less than one in 2.5 million births.
But their case is even more unique: they share the thalamus, a deep area of the brain responsible for sensory information.
Today, Tatiana and Krista are 18 years old. They live in a small house in Vernon, in the Canadian province of British Columbia, with their mother, grandmother, and several siblings.
It’s an ordinary family, full of love, even if the circumstances are unusual.
The Hogan sisters are not ordinary twins. They are two people with an extraordinary neural connection. Thanks to their shared thalamus, they can feel, hear, see, and even think for each other.

A Life with Limitations
Despite their incredible abilities, Tatiana and Krista have serious health problems:
They both have weak hearts—especially Tatiana, which poses a threat to her life. Krista suffers from seizures and epilepsy, and the family must constantly monitor her condition.
They struggle to get around—they use a special wheelchair because coordination between two bodies requires a lot of effort.
They also have developmental delays and follow a special educational program.
Despite their difficulties, the sisters are cheerful, talkative, and full of life. They love cartoons, video games, music, and spending time with others. They have very distinct tastes, personalities, and preferences.
Tatiana is more impulsive, Krista is calmer.
They enjoy being together. Separation was considered for a time, but doctors immediately ruled this out: the operation would have been fatal for both.
