In 2009, in a village in China’s Hunan province, Ileon Xie gave birth to her first child, a boy named Hu Kang. Like any mother, she couldn’t wait for the moment when she could see her son again.
But what she saw a few hours after giving birth was forever etched in her memory.
When they brought her baby, his mother was paralyzed with horror. Hu Kang had a rare and serious condition: a bilateral transverse facial deformity.

The front of the skull did not have time to fuse during fetal development, and as a result, the baby’s face was left with two deep lacerations that ran from the corners of his mouth to his ears. This gave him a frightening, almost mask-like appearance.

He told his story to reporters, and the photos of little Hu Kang caused a stir. People from all over China, and later from abroad, started donating money for his treatment.
